Making Oral Health Fun at the Perot Museum in Dallas, Texas

With so many things to do and see in the Dallas, Texas, metro area, it can sometimes be difficult to decide what to do on your day off. But a very fun museum for people of all ages is Dallas’ own Perot Museum of Nature and Science. The Perot features five floors of natural history and science exhibits ranging from dinosaur bones to priceless gemstones and even an exhibit on what it means to be human. But one of the best exhibits at the museum is tucked away on the lower level, where if you don’t know about it, you can easily miss it.

Making Healthy Choices

Here in Texas, there’s not much we love more than our sports. That’s why the Lamar Hunt Family Sports Hall at the Perot Museum is such a popular exhibit. There you can challenge yourself and test your hand-eye coordination; learn the difference between X-rays, CT scans and MRIs; and play a really fun multi-player game that teaches you how the health, fitness and nutrition choices you make can directly affect your lifespan!

The game explains how everything we do - including the types of foods we eat, the level of activity we participate in each day, the types of exercises we choose, and even how we commute to work - can add or subtract years from our overall lifespan. Did you know that the more education you receive, the longer you’ll live on average? Or that the fewer friends we have, the shorter our average lifespan?

But Dr. Hill’s favorite part of the game is the part that features oral health - or more specifically, how caring for, or not caring for, our teeth properly can affect our lifespan. Did you know that if you take excellent care of your oral health, you can expect to add an average of six years to your lifespan? And if you don’t take care of your oral health, you can expect to subtract three years from your life? Imagine that - just for taking care (or not) of your teeth!

Though the game doesn’t really get into WHY you can expect to change your lifespan by taking care of your teeth, we have a few answers. When you take care of your teeth, you’re helping to prevent dangerous bacteria from causing infections like gum disease, which can turn into everything from heart disease to cancer to even diabetes and stroke, all of which can shorten your life.

Protecting your teeth helps safeguard your mouth from a host of nasty germs and bacteria, helping keep your smile healthy and bright, and helping reduce your risk of colds, infections and bad breath. After all, the Perot exhibit does say you live longer if you have more friends, but you’re not going to have many friends if your breath stinks!
